By Elizabeth Furstenau
On Monday, January 29, nine Pierce students ventured to Kearney for the UNK honor band.
These students learned a great amount of songs and performed them all in the matter of one day. The UNK honor band is for sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The conductor for the festival band was Dr. Duane Bierman. The conductor for the honor band was Dr. Richard Mayne.
Included in the festival band were Braxtynne Emerson, Lillian Blank, Kaylee Steffen, and Christian Nordby. These four worked together, along with many others, to play “Wanderlust” by Erin Keeton-Howard, “Zenith” by Peter Meechan, “Defiance" by George Sweet, and “Danse Carnivale" by Randall Standridge.
The honor band consisted of Mya Johnson, Amelia Ahlers, Trayton Christiansen, Tate Reinke, and Travis Emory. These individuals mastered four songs; “Triumphant Fanfare" by Richard Saucedo, “Pirates” by Douglas Akey, “The Lark in the Clear Air” by Clifton Taylor, and lastly, “The Thunderer" by J.P. Sousa/arr. Brion and Schissel.
Sophomore Johnson says, “Spending time with other kids from different schools who all shared the same passion was the best part. Kids from all over the state came to learn and enjoy music together. It was incredible.”
The day ended with a concert at the Health and Sports Center at the college.
