Pierce High Takes Down Wakefield

By Brynn Schwartz

On Saturday, September 14, the Pierce Bluejays went head-to-head in what wrapped up a 2-day tournament at Wakefield High School with a final round robin game against Ponca and tournament games against Tekamah-Herman and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (LCC) held at Wakefield High School. Pierce took home the championship of the tournament.

Starting off strong, Pierce went against Ponca with a winning score of 25-14 in the first set and wrapping it up they ended the second set with a 25-10 win.

“We did a lot of very good things this weekend. We handled the ball really well, which led to a much more effective offense. We still have a long way to go, but we've taken some great steps forward. I'm proud of this team and the improvements they've made,” coach Zach Weber states.

The second game, which was the first round of the tournament, was Pierce versus Tekamah-Herman with a win of 25-14 in the first set and finishing strong in the second set with a 25-18.

“We performed really good. Sweeping our way through a tournament is very difficult, and a tournament win is always awesome. We have some tough conference games this week that we need to focus on and continue taking steps forward as a team,” Claudia Riggert, a senior, exclaims.

Taking home the big win of the weekend, Pierce competed with LCC and won, scoring 25-20 in the first set and the last set was close with the score ending 25-20.

This week Pierce will be taking on Crofton on Thursday at 5 p.m.

Bluejays Command Day One

By Abbie Cone

Entering the Wakefield tournament on day one, Thursday, September 12, the Pierce High volleyball team came out strong and took command with the two games played over  Lyons-Decatur and Hartington Cedar Catholic.

In the first game, the Bluejays took the court against Lyons-Decatur and swept them 2-0, with both sets ending 25-12.

“I think we were a lot more confident in our skills this week than last week, and had a lot more energy overall,” senior Ava Knox remarks. “I also think we shook off our mistakes and reset quickly when things weren’t going our way.”

Nora Herian totaled nine kills through the two sets, and Abigail Cone tallied eight. Raleigh Pfeiffer added three to the team’s totals.

Pfeiffer also added three blocks, Herian had two, and Skylar Scholting, Claudia Riggert, and Cone each had one block.

For the final game of the night, the Bluejays faced the Trojans from Cedar Catholic and powered through with a 2-0 win. Pierce dominated 25-11 and 25-12, and won all aspects of the game.

For stats, Herian had the game-high 12 kills, Riggert added seven, and Cone tallied five.

Riggert led the team in digs with six, Cone had five, Ava Knox and Herian each had four, and Scholting added three.

Every team in the tournament plays two games on Thursday and one on Saturday as pool play, with two tournament games to follow for the teams that qualify.

“I was very pleased with the way we played, I think [Hartington Cedar Catholic] was our most complete match yet,” head coach Zach Weber comments about the Cedar Catholic game. “We were very consistent throughout both sets against Cedar with both serve and serve receive, and as a result we could basically do anything we wanted to offensively. We didn’t let a garbage ball hit the floor a single time, and that really started to fluster Cedar. That game was a glimpse of what we can be for the rest of the season, and I hope we can grow from here.”
