A New Student Teacher at Pierce High - Anna Mayes
By Alanna Mckeown
Entering a new semester, Anna Mayes starts a student teacher position at Pierce High School in the English department.
Mayes is from Beemer, and she graduated from West Point-Beemer Public. She is a senior at Wayne State College majoring in 7-12 English Language Arts Education and Theatre Education. Mayes is the middle child of three; her dad is a pastor, and her mom works for a tax company. She does not have a job currently, but she used to be a navigator (tour guide) at Wayne State, a dance instructor, and a lifeguard among other things. Some of the things that she enjoys are baking, music, poetry and reading, and stylish earrings.
She has always wanted to be a teacher and also knew that she loved English in high school, but almost became a music teacher instead.
“So far at Pierce, I love it here! I have never done block scheduling like this before, so 90-minute class periods are new to me. One of my favorite things about Pierce is my cooperating teacher Mrs. Legate. She is super helpful and creative, and it makes for an easier time adjusting and getting used to the school. I've also enjoyed getting to meet my students and help with the speech team so far,” Mayes said.
Her goal as a teacher is to help the future generations grow in their love and knowledge of English.
She hopes that the rest of this year goes well. She is looking forward to taking over the class completely in a few weeks, and she also hopes that the speech team crushes all of their meets this year.
Go see Mayes in Mrs. Legate’s room for the rest of the semester.
