New First Grade Student Teacher

By Zane McKeown

Elly Herley grew up in Clearwater and attended Summerland Public Schools and after earning her diploma there, she proceeded to enroll in classes in Wayne at Wayne State College. Herley is majoring in early childhood education with an endorsement special education.

After she completes college, her goal is to go on and get her master's degree. Herley would like to teach elementary school, preferably either kindergarten or first grade.

Herley is looking forward to finishing her student teaching at Pierce Elementary. The things she is anticipating the most are learning from her cooperating teacher Mrs. Brittany Weber, learning from the students, and gaining more knowledge about teaching.

“It's a lot with student teaching to get another job,” Herley stated. She is very busy with school, student teaching, and commuting from Wayne to Pierce. With the little free time she has, she loves watching TV but loves spending time with her friends and family even more.

For the small amount of time she has been in the Pierce community and the classroom, Herley noted that everybody she has encountered has been so “welcoming and friendly.” She also mentioned that the community was “really nice.”
