Pierce High Students' Experience of Being Pulled Over
By Brayden Suckstorf
High schoolers getting pulled over is a pretty common experience, often due to speeding, distracted driving, or minor traffic violations.
Many of our young drivers are still gaining knowledge on the road, which can lead to mistakes like failing to signal or rolling through stop signs. Encounters with police officers can be nerve wracking for teens, especially if it is their first time being pulled over. While some may receive a warning, others face fines, points off their license, or have to take a STOP class. These experiences serve as important learning moments, improving safe driving habits and the consequences of reckless behavior. Some students do not learn from their first time, and receive several tickets, here is a look at Pierce High’s percentages of being pulled over.
“I was pretty nervous, but I knew the officer was just doing his job to make the road safe. I learned a valuable lesson to pay attention to the speed better,” Cameron Kuehler, a junior, stated on behalf of his first time being pulled over.
“I was very nervous, and was just really scared of what my parents would think. I learned not to drive underage [and] also to be smarter,” Zane McKeown stated.
In a poll conducted with 145 Pierce High drivers responding, starting on a good note, about 71% of Pierce High School students have not been pulled over. Around 12% percent of students have only been stopped once on the road. Of the respondents, eight percent of students have been pulled over twice in their driving career. Another eight percent of students at Pierce High have been pulled over three or more times. Lastly, one person has been pulled over a total of seven times.
Being pulled over can be a scary experience for the first time, yet it can also be a great learning experience. Students can learn from this article by keeping the roads safe, as well as points on a license like Cameron and Zane did after their first time being pulled over.
