Which are Better Pets? Dogs or Cats?

By Keaton Vavra

Many people believe that the best companions are ones that will stay by your side for their entire lives. This is why dogs or cats are known to be better companions for people.

Dogs are known to be loyal, trusting, and stay with you no matter what you do. Dogs have been known as “Man’s best Friend” for a long time now and that gives people the impression that dogs are better than cats. Dogs can also be trained to fight or hurt others even if they do not want to.

“Dogs pay back while cats just sit around and judge. Dogs are more active and fun and can be trained easier. All in all, cats are horrible,” Brody Knox, a junior, argues.

Cats, on the other hand, are known to be selfish, rude, and act like they own everything. People believe they act this way because they treat them like this. They feed them whenever they want, and they give them treats or catnip to enjoy themselves. Many people dislike cats and avoid them because they have never raised a cat the right way.

“Cats are less maintenance, if you go on a vacation, you don’t need to get somebody to take care of them, you can just give them food and water and they will be fine. Cats are more compassionate than dogs and have a more sensitive nature. Dogs are hard to train, depend on their owner for everything, messy, loud, destructive, and vet bills are expensive for them,” Brianna Rundell, a junior, argues.

I believe personally cats are superior pets, which may be an unpopular opinion. However, I have a cat that I raised. It grew up with me treating it correctly, and it is loyal to me and will follow me around. My cat is smart and loyal, but my dogs are not. Even though I also raised them since they were puppies, they are wild and tear up things around our house.

In a survey conducted with Pierce Jr Sr High School students, 24.3% of the school believes that cats are better, while 75.7% of the school believes dogs are better.
