Student Entrepreneur: Mya Johnson

By Elizabeth Furstenau

Getting a fresh set of nails is an errand many people enjoy. Being the one to do the nails is also just as enjoyable. Mya Johnson has found a business in what began as a hobby she took part in instead of finishing her homework.

Johnson’s business is doing the nails of mostly people at Pierce High. She has always had a love for art and doing nails is how she expresses it. She has created designs as simple as a french tip to as timely and difficult as 3D art work.

Johnson’s mother was the one who had originally introduced her to the world of false nails. Her mom began doing nails for weddings and other occasions. Johnson has followed in her mom’s footsteps. Johnson claims her parents and other family are very supportive in her business.

Doing nails is not the cheapest business to be in. Johnson says she has spent around $150 in all of the supplies she uses.

“I guess I came to school with decent nails and one of my friends asked me if I could do theirs, and it just started there,” Johnson states.

She had first started out with only doing her own, but eventually her talent was recognized. She believes the hardest part is making time to do it because if anyone knows her, she is a busy lady. The business is also rewarding for her. It is a laid back business where she gets more time to talk to people, and she gets to help people out.

She does not advertise her business for unspoken reasons, but the word of her business still comes out. Her previous clients tell and brag about how amazing their nails turned out. This causes them to share the artist and they come running to Johnson.

“Don’t be afraid to just start,” Johnson states. “That’s the hardest part, and when you do it, really throw yourself into it. It is hard and it’s going to be hard, but it’s very rewarding in the end.”
