Varsity Golfers Face Tough Competition at Hartington Meet
By Zane McKeown
The Pierce golf team hit the links at the Hartington Golf Meet on Tuesday, where they faced a strong field of competitors and a challenging course. Despite solid efforts from all five golfers, the team finished with a total score of 380 and did not have any individual placers.
Leading the way for Pierce was Cooper Wachholtz, who carded an 88. He was followed by Noah Fuerhoff Gubbels with a 92, Cameron Kuehler with a 97, and both Tyler Schulz and Payton Cederburg finishing at 103.
Though the Bluejays did not secure top spots, the meet provided valuable experience as the season continues.
“It was a bit of a struggle for us as a team, but we remain focused on improvement. A couple of guys earned ‘improvement balls’ for setting personal records or attaining individual achievements. It’s something to build on,” head coach Zach Weber said.
Even with the tough day on the course, the golfers and coach stayed positive and focused on learning from the outing.
“I had broken my personal record, so it was a pretty good day for me. I know we struggled some as a team, but every meet is another day to improve,” Kuehler said.
The team will look to bounce back at their next meet as they continue to build momentum heading into the heart of the season.

By Brody Quinn Coulter
The varsity golf team had a strong showing at the Lutheran High Invitational at Fairplay golf course on April 25.
Cooper Wachholtz led the team with a score of 81, finishing fourth, followed by Tyler Schulz, who shot an 84. Noah Fuerhoff Gubbels finished with a 98, and Payton Cederburg shot a 100. Finally, Cameron Kuehler finished the day with a 103.
“It was not my day, but I’m excited to improve the rest of the year,” Schulz says. The team finished in sixth place out of seven teams.
“I did not start well, but it improved through the day; however, I was unable to maintain a low score. I’m also proud of Cooper for getting rid of 'the shanks',” Cederburg says.
The team will compete again at Fairplay for districts on May 19.
Bluejay JV Golfers Battle Through Challenging Round
By Brayden Suckstorf
It was a challenging afternoon for the boys Bluejay golf team, who battled through windy conditions and a challenging course to finish 13th out of 14 teams with a total score of 490 in a junior varsity meet at Osmond.
Leading the way for the Bluejays was Brayden Lambrecht, who shot a 116 to pace the team. Skyler Stern followed closely behind with a 120, while Alexzander Weinrich scored a 125. Charlie Ottis finished with a 129, and Korbin Gordon finished out the scoring with a 137.
“Our team did alright; we all had great and bad holes. Besides that, there is still much to improve going into our next meeting. The biggest thing would be consistently making great contact with the ball and then adjusting our backswing to get onto the green when we need to. For myself, I need to continue to work on putting in that can make a huge difference from shooting a terrible score and an amazing score,” junior Skyler Stern stated.
The team will look to bounce back at their next meet in Hartington, where they hope to take some strokes off their scores and climb the leaderboard.
Boys Golf competes at Laurel
By Parker Gaes
The Pierce High Bluejays JV team flew to Laurel to compete in a fun day of golf, on Tuesday, April 15.
Leading the team was Brayden Lambrecht with a score of 109 in 18 holes.
The boys put up a great fight against the conditions.
“The guys battled last week. The conditions for all the tournaments we have had so far have been windy. As the golf season goes on we will have better weather. They just need to keep battling and play better in bad weather. All our golfers need to improve on their scoring shots from 100 yards and in. Overall, not a bad start to the season! Just need to keep getting better a little bit at a time,” assistant golf coach Jason Freudenburg said.
“I feel like I could have done better and it did not do as good as I wanted to. I feel like there's a lot of room for improvement and I know that I’ve gotten better from my first practice and got a lot better at what I’ve done with my work at the course,” Korbin Gordon said.
Charlie Ottis scored a total of 118 in total.
Teammate Skyler Stern scored in all 130.
Gordon scored a total of 143.
Alexzander Weinrich scored 143 in total.
The Jays placed 14th out of the 16th teams at the golf meet.
