Bluejay Fence Gets a Makeover

By Brayden Suckstorf

People may have noticed a familiar sight getting a colorful update recently. The fence that once had the Bluejay eyes on it, a known piece of art around Pierce High School, is being repainted with a fresh new design.

Originally painted years ago, the painting was first refreshed in 2006 and again in 2012-2013, then just repainted white due to paint chipping. This year, the owners decided it was time for another update. They invited students from the art program to take part in the project.

"No matter what you are going through, the sun always rises. Hope the light shines on everyone who sees it,” art teacher Allison Koehler said.

The new design includes several meaningful symbols. A flag was added to honor the country we live in and the freedoms we enjoy. The artists also chose to include prairie grasses and the sun to represent Nebraska. Of course, the painting would not be complete without the Bluejay, representing our school.

“I really like the way the new fence pops out, something different from the bluejay eyes. I can not wait to see what the finished product will look like,” student Zane McKeown stated.

If you have not seen it yet, be sure to check out the freshly painted fence on the way to Pierce High School.
