Pierce Community Can Pickleball
By Abbie Cone
Pickleball may not be the first sport that comes to mind for most people, but it is gaining popularity for people of all ages. Thanks to Pierce’s new courts, a project by the student council last fall, located where the tennis courts stand off Highway 13 in Chilver’s Park, the community has had the chance to experience the game firsthand.
More than just a pastime, pickleball is easy to learn, welcoming to beginners, and a great way to stay active while connecting with others.
“I think pickleball appeals to such a wide range of ages because it is a low-intensity form of exercise suitable and comfortable for all fitness levels,” Dr. Paul McCawley, professor at Wayne State College, Pierce High track coach, and resident of Pierce, explains. “I think it can also provide a competitive avenue for those individuals who are looking for that as well.”
The pickleball courts are easy to access, free, and provide a space for people to be active, an important part of a healthy lifestyle. While pickleball is an easy-going activity for all ages to enjoy, its benefits go far beyond that. Its laid-back nature allows for plenty of social interaction and connections to be built.
“I’ve gotten to play with other people in my class that I don’t always hang out with, and so I get to know them better, which is great,” Natalie Endorf, a sophomore at Pierce High, comments.
Whether someone is looking for fitness, competition, or simply a fun way to spend time with others, pickleball has something to offer. So while the weather is still nice, grab a paddle, invite some friends, and enjoy some fun activity!
