Girls Mid-State Golf Competition Paves Way for Districts
By Lauren Delka

Hosted at Ponca, the Pierce High girls golf team competed in the Mid-State golf tournament last Thursday, bringing home an individual conference champion.

Rylee Altwine succeeded for the Jays, placing first individually with a score of 84.

Out of the six teams that were there (Battle Creek, Boone Central, Wayne, O’Neill, and Norfolk Catholic), Pierce came in fifth. Shooting nine holes alongside the opposing teams, Pierce shot themselves a 421.

“The course was very hard to walk because there were a lot of hills. That was pretty tough. It was also very hot,” Altwine explains about the challenges of the course and overall day.

Brailey Jensen agreed with Altwine about the challenge of the day saying, “Walking the hills was challenging.”

“Some other challenges were if you hit the ball right, then you were in the hazard, which is difficult because I hit the ball right a lot,” Altwine states.

The rough terrain and high temperatures posed challenges for the team, but they still managed to come through in the end. “I think we played well. Personally, my chipping and putting have gotten a lot better,” Jensen explains.

In addition to Altwine’s 84, Addison Frye shot a 106, Camassia White had a 110, Jensen ended the day with a 121, and Brooke Podany rounded out the team score with a 128.

Pierce’s JV golfers also attended the meet. Alyvia Marks shot a 119 and Jaelyn Jensen had a 140.

The next competition will be districts at Wayne.

“The first shot is always the hardest, but as the day goes on, it gets easier,” Altwine explains.

By Lawson Zierke

In their final triangular of the season, the Pierce High Lady Jays golf team travelled to Elkhorn Valley to compete against Elkhorn Valley and Battle Creek, placed second at the invitational held on Tuesday, September 30.

“I feel the team has progressed a lot since the beginning of the season. We have a lot of fun together, no matter what happens out on the course, we always find a way to make each other laugh and have a good time,” senior golfer Rylee Altwine said. Altwine shot a 40 and was the lowest scorer on the Pierce team.

The other varsity golfers were Camassia White, who scored a 47. Addison Frye shot a 54. Brailey Jensen ended the day with a 57 while Brooke Podany finished with a 62.

On the JV side of things, Pierce had two golfers who were Alyvia Marks with a 58 and Jaelyn Jensen, who scored a 61.

“I thought our performance was better. We are so close to scoring really really well,” head coach Jason Freudenburg said about the team's performance. “Fortunately, we have the opportunity to do that at conference and at districts. I and the girls look forward to those opportunities.”

Anyone can support the girls at their district golf meet on Tuesday, October 7, at Wayne Country Club, starting at 9:30 a.m.

By Skyler Stern

The girls golf team made their way to Hartington to play 18 holes on Monday, September 29, and overall, Pierce shot a pretty low score, finishing with a combined team score of 408.

“I'm getting more consistent with my putting as the season is coming to a wrap,” Brooke Podany, a sophomore, states.

On the individual side, Rylee Altwine finished with the lowest score for the Jays with an 87.

Camassia White and Podany both shot a 103 to add to the total.

Addison Frye finished by shooting a 115 with Brailey Jensen coming in close behind her, smacking a 127 to finish on a good note for the Bluejays.

For the junior varsity, Alyvia Marks shot a 138, and Jaelyn Jensen shot a 158.

The girls are working on being consistent at a high level in everything they do. That is their warm-up, chipping, putting, scoring shots, and mentally being tough when things do not go their way,” head coach Jason Freudenburg comments on what team is focused on leading up to districts. “We are golfing good right now.”
