Sophomores Explore Different Careers at Wayne State College

At Pierce High School, teachers and administrators do their best to prepare students for their careers. On October 14, all PHS sophomores attended Wayne State College to expand and explore their career knowledge.
Last year, as freshmen, the students filled out a test-like exam to see what career they most likely wanted to go into. Then the people at Wayne go through and put together where students would go for sessions.
“It's part of the school counseling curriculum established by the state of Nebraska that all students have to have access to career exploration. So we choose to take sophomores to the sophomore career day, because that's what's available. They identify whether the field is something they want to continue to explore or something that they have realized, no, I don't want to explore this, so it can work positively in that it helps them and encourages them to continue to consider the field, or it deters them from that field, which is that's successful in both ways,” PHS counselor Danielle Goetsch says.
At Wayne, students from many of the different towns across northeast Nebraska were broken up into other career paths. Students had to attend three sessions about the career they would most likely pursue and two breakout sessions, where they talked about different real-world problems.
“I did a class on flower arrangement, about being a florist. I had one in graphic design, because I like being creative and doing stuff like that,” sophomore Collin Wessendorf says.
By giving students a hands-on look at different professions, Pierce High School continues to support the students for life after graduation.
