Girls Wrestling Takes Second Place at North Bend

The girls wrestling team made their way to North Bend on Saturday, December 13, to compete in their second tournament of the season where they ended up placing second as a team. 

At 105, Essynce Owens-Webb placed second. In the quarterfinal round, she pinned Marnita Spatz of Blue River. Owens-Webb won by fall over Grace Beckwith from Logan View in the semifinal match. In the first place match, she fell to Alejandra Reyes of Johnson County Central.

Wrestling at 110, Caybri Monroe fell to Brooklyn Ruskamp from Arlington. In the consolation round, Monroe received a bye. She won by decision, 6-0, over Harper Hermelbracht of Blue River in the consolation round two. Monroe fell to Lupita Alba of Wayne in consolation round three. 

MaKenna Blecher, wrestling at 115, placed third. In the quarterfinal round, Blecher pinned Zoey MacDonald from Twin River. She then fell to Edyn Goodwin from Tekamah-Herman in the semifinal match. In the consolation semifinal, Blecher won by fall over Kaitlyn Mahaney from NEN. She then pinned Hadley Woehler from Wayne in the third place match. 

At 120, Isabelle Streff placed first. In round one, she received a bye, then Streff pinned Lilly McChesney of Arlington in 21 seconds in the quarterfinal match. In the semifinal round, Streff pinned Ayvree Abler from Wayne. Streff won by fall over Sarina Redding of Tekamah-Herman in the first place match.

“I thought our team did really well. Almost all of us placed. We were really aggressive. I’m really, really proud of how we did. Most of our competition wasn’t there, but it was more of a tournament to gain confidence,” Streff comments. 

Wrestling at 125, Jayan Sackville placed fourth. In round one, Sackville pinned Leah Johnson from Tri County Northeast. Sackville fell to Sofie Lewis from Arlington in the quarterfinal match. Sackville then pinned Ella Powell from North Bend in consolation round two. In consolation round three, Sackville pinned River Butts from NEN. Sackville won by fall over Eva Vandenberg from Blue River in the consolation semifinal. In the third place match, she fell to Sofie Lewis from Arlington. 

Evelyn Skrdla (130) placed third. In the quarterfinal, Skrdla won by tech fall over Madison Klement from Blue River, 15-0. She fell to Daisy Cameron from Tekamah-Herman in the semifinal round. In the consolation semifinal, Skrdla pinned Shaylee Sanderson from NEN. She won the third place match, pinning Abbie Schakat from Arlington in 39 seconds. 

Lainey Jensen, wrestling at 135, placed third after receiving a bye in round one. In the semifinal match, Jensen fell to Kaileigh Covert from Blue River late in the third period. She pinned Jayda Stallbaum from Tri County Northeast in the consolation semifinal match. In the third place match, Jensen won by fall over Megan Magnuson from Wayne. 

Isabelle Kuehler (170) placed first. In round one, she received a bye, then Kuehler won by fall over Crystaleen Showecker from Winnebago in the quarterfinal round. She pinned Madilyn Reese from North Bend in the semifinal match. In the first place match, Kuehler pinned Alexandria Ziska of Wayne. 

“I think we did amazing with only 10 girls on our team. We got second place. We were only two points behind the first place team, which had a full team,” Kuehler states.

Wrestling at 190, Reniya Miller placed third. In the quarterfinal match, she fell to Kendra Baete of Blue River. R. Miller won by a 7-0 decision in consolation round one over Lainey Meyer from Wayne. In the consolation semifinal round, she won by medical forfeit over Katrina Schreiner from Logan View. R. Miller won by decision, 5-1, over Nadine Williams from NEN in the third place match.

Finally, at 235, Candace Miller placed third. She fell to Breanna Meyer from Logan View in round one. In round two, C. Miller fell to Evelyn Matulka of Blue River. In her final round, C. Miller pinned Jasmine Contreras of Wayne. 

The girls wrestling team will be back on the mats on Thursday, December 18, at the Elkhorn Valley quad.
