Pierce High Invests in New Head Coaching Talent

By Kolten Wragge

A loved teacher and coach took on the new opportunity as head football coach for the Bluejays. The man, the myth, the legend, Tyler Legate, adds to his resume as a science, math, and strength and fitness teacher, and as a state champion wrestling coach.

“I think to make a great team you need to practice mental and physical toughness along with being able to work with teammates," Legate said.

Legate played at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he walked on and won awards including Nebraska walk-on MVP and also Second team Academic All-Big 12 in 2009. Legate did not just play at Nebraska, though; before becoming a piece of history for the Huskers, he played at South Dakota before transferring to Nebraska.

He is quite comfortable in the state finals after being in them for two times for dual wrestling and has been a part of a few state champion finishes for the football team behind previous head coach Mark Brahmer.

“I put the players in positions where they are forced to be mentally and physically tough along with using their teammates as tools for success,” Legate said when asked about how he implements his valued skills in practice.

“I love that coach teaches us to never give up, and that's not just in football and wrestling; it's also in the classroom,” junior Charlie Ottis said.

We wish good luck to new head football coach Tyler Legate.
