Pierce Volleyball Takes On O’Neill
By Lydia Cone
The Pierce High volleyball team made the trip up to O’Neill to take on the Eagles on Thursday night and made a sweep of the night.
“It was a very good day overall. The freshmen, JV, and varsity all did very positive things, and each swept their match. Any time we can pick up conference wins, I am happy,” head coach Zach Weber said.
The Bluejays swept the Eagles, with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-21.
“We connected with Adrienne early on in the match, so it was hard to stop us offensively,” sophomore middle hitter Kayton Werner said.
Senior outside hitter Nora Herian and junior outside hitter Kyndal Werner co-led the teams with 16 kills each, and Ka. Werner and Adrienne Riggert followed with six and five each. Lydia Cone and Alayna Herian both tallied one.
Ky. Werner led the team in digs with eight, followed closely by Josie Painter with seven, and N. Herian with six. Ka. Werner contributed five, and Kenzi Nygren and L. Cone both had three, and Riggert tallied two on the night.
The next match for Pierce is at home against the Elkhorn Valley Falcons on Thursday night. Be sure to be there and cheer them on.
Pierce Dominates at Home Triangular
by Jada Brummels
Last Tuesday, Pierce hosted a volleyball triangular with Boone Central and Wayne schools. The varsity teams competed at the high school, with Pierce and Boone Central playing first, then Wayne vs. Boone Central second, and Pierce vs. Wayne wrapping up the night.
In the Pierce versus Boone Central game, the Bluejays came out on top, winning in two sets. The first set’s score was 25-17 and in the second set, the Bluejays fought hard and managed to win 27-25.
During this game, senior Nora Herian led the team with 14 kills, Kyndal Werner had eight, and Kayton Werner added three.
Ky. Werner also led the team with seven digs; Josie Painter and Herian added six each; Ka. Werner had three; Adrienne Riggert had two; and Kenzi Nygren, Alayna Herian, and Mya Froehlich added one each.
In serving, Ka. Werner led the team with two aces; and Ky. Werner and N. Herian added one each.
Finally, Riggert had 51 set assists during this game.
“It's the greatest team sport, and even the best players have to rely on their teammates to produce. We won as a team, and that means everyone contributed when we needed a contribution,” head coach Zach Weber states.
While the Bluejays rested, Wayne and Boone Central battled it out, and the Blue Devils came out on top, winning 30-28 and 25-18.
In the final game of the night, the Bluejays played the Blue Devils and won, adding another win to their record for the year, tallying 21 wins and 3 losses. In the first set, the Jays won 25-17, and in the second set they continued to battle, coming out on top, 25-21.
Leading the team with digs for the night was Painter with nine, N. Herian with eight, Ky, Werner with six, Riggert with three, Lydia Cone with two; and Froehlich and Nygren with one each.
Herian led the team in kills with 15, then Ky. Werner with eight, Ka. Werner with three, and Cone with two.
At the serving line, Ka. Werner had an impressive four aces during this game with Painter and Ky. Werner each adding two.
Finally, Riggert had 55 assists during this game.
“I'd say both teams challenged us in different ways,” Riggert remarked, after the triangular. “Wayne has a really good setter, and they're really good offensively. But Boone also did a good job picking up some of the hard hit balls we played.”
Despite this tough competition, Weber adds that, “Overall, I am happy with the way we handled both teams. Wayne and Boone are two very different teams… but we found a way to win, and in our conference, that's always a good thing.
Come support the team on October 13, when they will play Guardian Angels Central Catholic (GACC) at home.
JV Volleyball Can Not Be Stopped
By Raleigh Pfeiffer
The JV volleyball team dominated at the home triangular against Boone Central and Wayne on Tuesday, October 6. They first competed against the Boone Central Cardinals, had a game off, and finished off the night against the Wayne Blue Devils.
Against the Cardinals, the Pierce JV showed off their strengths and won. In the first set, the Bluejays came out strong and started their night with a first-set score of 25-19. The second set required a bigger battle, but the Bluejays still came out on top with a score of 25-23.
This was just the beginning of the night, for the Bluejays were to compete against the Blue Devils next. Easily defeating the Blue Devils, the Bluejays won their final game of the night. The first set ended with a score of 25-13, while the second set was 25-18.
The Bluejays had many strengths as a team throughout the night.
“We had good communication, serving, and rallies throughout the night,” freshman Shaylie Wachter states.
Looking at the game in a more communicative and personal light, the JV team has had some line up switches and were able to finally click last night.
“It feels good for us to know that we are feeling comfortable. We played together and felt more connected and comfortable, and we were all happy with that,” junior Meredith Krienert states.
Despite the many wins, the season is not over yet, and there is always room for improvement.
“We need to get the lead and keep it in the beginning of the sets so that we don’t have to make up for it later,” Krienert states.
Support the JV team at their next home game at the high school on October 13 against the Guardian Angels Central Catholic, starting at 5 with JV and varsity to follow.
