Hawkfest Honor Band and Choir

Pierce Students Compete at the Hawkfest Honor Band
By Brynley Koch

Select Pierce band members participated in the Hawkfest Honor Band held at Northeast Community College on Monday, October 5..

The band members who were picked to represent Pierce were Carter Sindt, playing the first chair French horn, and Carson Fevold, playing the percussion.

“The hardest part was being there for the entire day,” Fevold said. “The best part was lunch and hanging out with kids from other schools. I also like to play the grand piano when I'm there. I wouldn't really say it's like competing; it's more like working together, unless you're talking about the auditions. Then it's not that bad, Hawkfest is a really easy honor band. It will give us opportunities to gain recognition.”

They pulled out of the High School bright and early the morning of the competition. Upon arrival at the college, they started practicing as much as they could for the 5:30 p.m. performance.

“I really liked walking around the campus and getting to eat lunch on campus. I enjoyed playing with musicians that I haven't played with before. I did it last year, so I kind of knew what to expect,” Sindt, a sophomore, said.

The event took place at the Lifelong Learning Center at Northeast Community College. They brought together talented 9-12 grade musicians from 24 different schools to rehearse music and then play in a concert later that night.

“Both of these students auditioned for a spot in the ensemble. I was very comfortable with Carson and Carter representing our band, as they are both hard-working, independent, and kind. Depending on the honor band and the level of students involved, learning this music in one day can be challenging. Both Carter and Carson found the music for Hawkfest a little more on the simple side, but that allowed them to be great examples for the other students,” high school band director Michael Sindt said.

The Pierce High School Honor Choir Demonstrates their Skills

The Pierce High School choir members went to Northeast Community College for the Hawkfest Honor Choir.

Choir members who went were Spencer Sindt, Addison Frye, Savannah Lingenfelter, and Isabella Skillstad.

“I think the best experience is being able to sing with other kids from other schools,” Amy Barnhill, choir director, stated.

The honor choir had a whole day at Northeast where they competed and sang their hearts out with other participants.

“I really liked my honor choir experience. It was fun but a long day. We were all tired after it, but it was definitely worth it. If you're in choir, I definitely recommend auditioning, as it is a fun musical learning experience,” Lingenfelter, a junior, stated.

“It was a long day of singing, and even though the music arrived late for some schools, they did a very good job,” Barnhill stated

“My favorite part about the day was definitely performing. We spent the entire day from 8- 4:30 practicing for our performance. It finally paid off in the end when we came together to showcase our hard work,” Lingenfelter stated.

Overall, it was an eventful day with fun and excitement.
