Students Look Ahead to Their Futures
By Eleanor Bauermeister
While college and planning for the future may seem far away for sophomores at Pierce High, it is really just around the corner. Sophomores went to Wayne State College for a career day that was hosted by University of Nebraska Extension Office representatives this past Tuesday, October 20.
Students signed up for classes and sessions that they would be interested in attending before heading to the career day, depending on what they think they would want to go to college for. Their day consisted of going to different classes and sessions where they learned about specific fields that they were interested in, and they were able to ask questions to learn more about those fields. Students also went a little old-school and had to read a map to find their way around Wayne’s campus to find their classes.
The career day offers more than just a look at a college campus.
“I just think opportunities in general because the military is there. They talk about apprenticeships, talk about internships, college opportunities. It’s just another way to explore the options after high school,” guidance counselor Danielle Goestech said.
The students only had four classes that they had signed up for where they would learn about what specific jobs in those fields consist of. They also signed up for two sessions where the topics were broader, where they could learn things like how to manage their money, how to set goals for themselves, and how to prepare a resume, among other things.
“I think the medical one [class] was my favorite because I’m looking into going into something like that, and it just covered a lot of areas of the medical field, and it was really cool to learn about it,” sophomore Lydia Cone said.
While the sophomore class still has two years left to decide their futures, it is never too early to start planning out what they want to do with the rest of their lives.
