Giving Back to Others
By Tiffany Chaney
Someone deciding to help in their community lightens up the atmosphere and its people. There are different ways people can help in their communities.
Some ideas to help include doing food drives, blood drives, and yard work for neighbors or even local businesses. People can also help the elderly people in their community by helping them with their groceries and opening up the doors for them. The outcome of doing this is great support from the community and a positive, kind community.
“Serving through the community puts a great friendly atmosphere on helping people,” Shelly Adams, a teacher at Pierce High, stated.
In the Pierce community, Hands for Christ takes place every summer. In Hands for Christ, students and community members hold a food drive on the very first night, then have supper and a starting prayer for the weekend. Then on the second day, students and adults in the community get split into groups. When people are in those groups they get assigned different jobs to do throughout the community so the groups go and do things like weeding gardens, washing windows, taking down trees, and painting for people in the community. After every house, Hands for Christ members always do a prayer with the owner shedding a light and positive atmosphere within the community.
“Donating your time to others feels good to know you are making a difference in your community and also makes things go smoother and faster,” Diana Kuehler, a teacher at Pierce High School, stated.
The students at Pierce High School took a survey on how they help in their community. Of the responders, 40.9% of the students help neighbors, 17% do food drives, 20.5% help elderly people, 4.5% do blood drives and another 1.1% do Hands for Christ, and 2.3% do not help in the community.
