Bluejays Battle Multiple Schools in Quiz Bowl

By Brody Coulter

The annual ESU 8 high school quiz bowl was held Wednesday, February 26, in Neligh. The quiz bowl allows students to showcase their knowledge and skills against other schools and students.

There are many different categories and subjects in which students are asked random knowledge questions, much like Jeopardy. Competitors are on a team answering questions head to head against an opposing school.

This year the competition had 20 different area schools competing for a quiz bowl title. The Norfolk Catholic Knights were crowned champions, followed by the O’Neill Eagles taking second, and the Lutheran High Northeast Eagles taking home bronze.

“I enjoy quiz bowl because it allows me to show my knowledge in a fun way against other schools but it also gets me a fun yet productive break from school,” Colter Anderson, a member of the quiz bowl team, says.

Anderson is a third year member of the high school team. An example of some of the questions asked include, “The United States had no shortage of colloquialisms during the cold war too. What did the USSR refer to the rampart that it built?” The answer is the infamous Berlin Wall.

“Quiz bowl can be super fun, it lasts about 3-4 hours then we always go out to eat,” Nickolas Efta, also a member of the team, says.

Quiz bowl is held yearly by ESU8 however there are other quiz bowl opportunities through other organizations. Pierce will head to the Mid-State conference quiz bowl in Albion on March 31.
