Hayden Bauer and Skyler Stern, two members of the junior class, competed in a powerlifting meet in Ponca with 225 total competitors on Saturday, February 22.
The events consisted of squat, bench, and deadlift. For every event, each competitor got three attempts at each lift. Stern competed in the 148 weight class and got fifth place in his division. Stern’s maxes included: deadlift-370, squat-270, bench-170, meaning his total was 810.
Bauer competed in the 198 weight class and received second place in his division. Bauer’s maxes included: deadlift-475, squat-380, bench-265, meaning his total was 1120.
While many people may not know much about powerlifting, this does not mean it is not an event to try.
“I got into powerlifting because I love lifting, and it was a fun thing to compete in with little experience,” Stern says.
Powerlifting meets typically last all day. The duo arrived at 6:00 a.m. for weigh-ins and left the meet at around 7:00 p.m.
“I love the sport. Strength training is fun to me,” Bauer says when asked how he feels about the sport.
