Pierce Moms Head to the Elementary for Donuts with Dames

By Alanna McKeown

Donuts with Dames is a day when each child at the elementary school has the opportunity to bring their mother, grandmother, aunt, or other important female figure to the school and treat her to a tasteful donut and a cup of juice.

To successfully get everyone a donut, the kitchen ladies had to make a total of 648 donuts. There were a total of 611 parents signed up ahead of time to come. Although that may seem like a lot of moms or mother figures there are roughly 82.5 million mothers in the United States, more than two billion worldwide and approximately 4.3 babies are born every second. About two percent of those US mothers have adopted children.

One of the 82.5 million mothers in this world went to the Pierce elementary school for donuts with dames, Katie Brummels, and she says, “It’s always fun to visit the elementary and see the kids' classrooms and what they've been working on. The kids always love to show their projects off.”

The elementary school hosts donut dames because it is a good way to get parents and grandparents into the building, and for them to see what their kids have been up to. Donuts with Dames has been happening for about 10 years.

“I think it's very important, just because you know whether it's male or female, we want to celebrate all our parents and everything that the mothers do for our kids and for our community, mothers are very special to everybody, so it's nice to have a day that we can show that appreciation to the mothers and the grandmothers for all they do for us,” elementary principal Trent Suehl says.
