Pierce Boys Golf

The Boys Swing into the Season at Neligh
By Rylee Altwine

Officially starting the boys golf season, the team traveled to Neligh on Thursday, April 10, to play nine holes, competing against three teams.

The teams that Pierce came up against were Elkhorn Valley, Neligh-Oakdale, and Plainview. Starting off for varsity, junior Tyler Schulz scored a 43, tying with Max Schaffer of Elkhorn Valley. Schulz took home a first place medal winning in a scorecard playoff against Schaffer.

“I think I played really well with how the conditions were. But it was obviously our first competitive round so I feel like I could work on some small things in my mental game. Overall I feel it went well,” Schultz stated.

Senior Cooper Wachholtz fell one shot behind Shultz and Schaffer, shooting a 44 and taking third place.

Senior Payton Cederburg shot a 59 and placed 21st.

Next up, Noah Fuerhoff-Gubbels sophomore scored a 67, getting 26th.

Junior Cameron Kuehler scored a 71, ending up 29th.

Golfing on JV was sophomore Brayden Lambrecht, who scored a 56.

Juniors Skylar Stern and Alexzander Weinrich with a 65 and 71, respectively.

Freshman Kolton Wragge scored a 72.

Lastly, sophomore Keaton Vavra ended the day with a 74.

“They battled in the very high winds... it was definitely a "character builder" round. We have plenty to work on but I'm proud of the group as a whole,” head coach Zachary Weber stated.

The Pierce boys junior varsity golf team hit the course at Plainview on Saturday, April 12, to compete against 16 other schools in a large and competitive tournament. On a day with 30 mph winds and a challenging field, the Bluejays finished 15th out of 17 teams.

Leading the way for Pierce was Kolten Wragge, who shot a 107 and earned 62nd place overall. Skyler Stern followed with a 116, landing him in 70th place.

Not far behind was Brayden Lambrecht, finishing with a score of 118 and taking 72nd.

Charlie Ottis carded a 134 for 78th place, and Alexzander Weinrich rounded out the team with a 143, earning 80th place.

While the meet was tough, the experience helped the young team gain valuable time on the course and build confidence for the rest of the season.

“The performance by the team on Saturday was a positive experience. Each golfer hit some good shots and had positive results. They did not score personal bests, but it was a good starting point for the season. For most of them it was their first tournament competition, which can be very tough. They handled the situation very well and I am proud of them,” assistant coach, Jason Freudenburg, said.

“I definitely wasn’t mad at my performance, but wasn’t happy with it either. I think it was overall pretty good for my first golf meet,” Wragge said.
