Most Interesting Winter Olympic Sports

By: Rylee Altwine

The top three most interesting winter sports in the 2026 Winter Olympics are Ski Jumping, Biathlon, and Nordic Combined. What makes these three events so interesting is how someone comes up with them. The techniques used are very unfamiliar on a day-to-day basis.

Ski jumping is where the athletes go off a steep, icy ramp, trying to soar through the air and gain the most distance over their competitors. When the athletes jump, their chest nearly touches the top of their skis. A person definitely has to be very flexible to compete in this sport and also know how to control the time they spend in the air.

Biathlon is where an athlete endures intense cross-country skiing with precision rifle marksmanship. This event takes speed on skis and is also a very precise shooter. The cross-country part has a lot of hills the athlete must go up, along with tons of curves. In the middle of the track is the shooting part. Halfway into the race, the athlete must stop and hit every target and then proceed to finish the race.

Nordic Combined is ski jumping and cross-country skiing. This event tests power and endurance. The athletes start with ski jumping to help determine start times for the cross-country race. The Nordic Combined is also known as one of the most challenging sports in the Olympics due to the level of precision athletes must possess in each event.

Although the above events are the most difficult, students at Pierce view other events as challenging

“I think figure skating is the most interesting sport because of the way they coordinate with one another while skating on the ice is just crazy to me,” sophomore Maelee Hamilton said.

Figure skating is a popular sport to watch, but another crowd favorite is the half pipe.

“I think the half pipe snowboarding is the most interesting because there’s a lot of variety, and it’s just really entertaining to watch,” senior Abigail Cone said.

The Winter Olympics have a total of 116 medal events across eight sports and 16 disciplines. There are 50 women's, 54 men's, and 12 mixed events.

The Olympics bring something different to television. Their coverage widens viewers education when it comes to all the different events. So next time the television is turned on, instead of watching popular sports, maybe take advantage of the Winter Olympics and learn something new.
