“2026 is the New 2016”

By Alanna McKeown

Since the start of 2026, people on social media have been saying that 2026 is the new 2016.

When walking through the halls of any high school in 2026, people might feel like they have stepped back in time. Oversized hoodies are back in every outfit, and playlists are filled with throwback songs from Justin Bieber, Adele, and Selena Gomez. The phrase “2026 is the new 2016” has become a popular saying on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram, capturing a growing trend of nostalgia.

“Nowadays, I see more students on their phones, playing video games, and using social media. Some popular clothes that were seen in 2016 are starting to come back, like bomber jackets and skinny jeans,” former teacher Amy Specht states.

On TikTok and Instagram, users are recreating 2016-style edits using grainy filters, old memes, and music that once ruled Vine and early YouTube.

“Aside from there being new faculty in the building and maybe a couple of changes to the dress code, I feel like Pierce High has stayed the same throughout the years. Mr. Brahmer and the rest of the administration have done an amazing job in providing a place that is consistent day in and day out. I don’t believe the school itself has changed, but the things that you guys have available in terms of technology in 2026 are night and day different,” member of the class of 2016 Morgan Stone says.

As the trends continue to recycle, one thing is clear: the past has a powerful hold on the present. Whether it’s fashion, music, or the internet, everyone in 2026 seems to be determined to relive 2016–one throwback post at a time.
