Advantages and Disadvantages of Daylight Saving Time
By Charlotte Enk
Do you also wonder why we change the clocks to daylight saving time in the first place?
Every second Sunday in March, the clocks are set to spring forward from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., with the exceptions of Hawaii and most of Arizona in the USA.
Arizona has mountain standard time all year round, so it is the same time as in California. The Navajo Nation Reservation in Arizona switches to daylight saving time, while the surrounding Arizona and Hopi Reservation do not. In some countries located on the equator, the clocks are not changed either. And in each country, this happens on different dates. This is due to the respective governments and depends on geographical location, energy policy, and cultural preferences. The EU has had a uniform regulation for 30 years.
The advantages to having daylight savings time are that there is more daylight and the quality of life improves as a result. At the same time, this also allows people to do more leisure activities outdoors in the evening.
However, the disadvantages to daylight savings time are that, especially in the first few days, you have one hour less sleep, which can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, and sleep disorders. It also disrupts your biorhythm, as your body is more accustomed to the natural winter time.
There are different points of view on this, some people love it, some people hate it.
“I love it, we have more daylight in the evenings, that means we can do more things,” Deb Koehlmoos, teacher at the high school, said.
“It was created when the farmers needed it. But we don’t need it anymore. God created us to get sleep and to wake up early with the sun; not when it’s still dark outside,” Pierce’s principal Mark Brahmer said.
Social studies teacher Brock Bretschneider has a similar perspective.
“We should get rid of it because in modern society it’s not needed anymore. Earlier they had candles, and they needed the sunlight. But now, the farmers have headlights. Because the heart attack rate is going up and there are more accidents around this time.”
For all the people who have children it is probably also a lot of work, so that their bodies can get used to it.
What is your opinion to keeping daylight saving time?
