People Who Shape Pierce: Tom Meyer

By Elizabeth Furstenau

The town of Pierce is well-rounded with a respectful community, but who are the people who help make it what it is? Who are the people who shape Pierce?

Tom Meyer is known as Tom of Tom’s Service, but he doubles as the mayor of the town of Pierce.

He began as a county commissioner. After holding the position for six years, he decided to run for mayor. Meyer has been the mayor since he ran and was elected back in 2018. He is coming up on his seventh year and will be running for re-election. He must first run in the primary election coming up in May, as well as the general election in November.

He wanted to become mayor because he saw how items were being taken care of in the town and wanted a change.

“You should never complain about stuff if you’re not willing to do something about it to try and fix it,” Meyer claimed.

Meyer also owns his own business, Tom’s Service. This business doubles as a gas station with a convenience store and an auto shop. Much like any other business owner who also has another career obligation, balancing the work of each job becomes a hassle.

“Some days are diamonds and some days are stones,” Meyer said. “There’s a lot of rewards, but sometimes there’s some struggles getting stuff done, or relates back and forth.”

Owning a business in town does allow him to have a more personal relationship with the people of the town. Meyer has also lived in Pierce County all his life and is a fifth generation resident.

“There is no greener place on Earth than Pierce, Nebraska, and I wouldn’t live anywhere else,” Meyer claimed.

Meyer wants Pierce to be a place that people want to live in.

“There’s a lot of things that you can do, a lot of things that you hope you can do, and then there’s that ultimate thing out there that some things you’re never going to get done,” he said. “I’m very proud of some of the stuff that has happened in our community.”

The town appreciates everything Mayor Tom Meyer has done and plans to do for the community.
